The men worked in the mills, the women planted and sold from their gardens, and they lived on molasses and cornbread to pay for every foot of ground. On the hill north of Mobile they built their homes, planted fruit trees, raised their churches, chose their own leaders and kept their own ways.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfricatown is still there. The town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The wreck of the Clotilda, found in the Mobile River in 2019, was added in 2021.
