Freedom came to the survivors of the Clotilda in 1865, but freedom alone gave them no country, no land and no home. So Kazoola went to the man who had brought them and asked plainly: give us a piece of this land and let us build ourselves an African Town.
He refused. So they bought it. The men worked in the mills, the women planted and sold from their gardens, and they lived on molasses and cornbread to pay for every foot of ground. On the hill north of Mobile they built their homes, planted fruit trees, raised their churches, chose their own leaders and kept their own ways.
Africatown is still there. The town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The wreck of the Clotilda, found in the Mobile River in 2019, was added in 2021. The descendants of the people who built it are still telling the story.
This hoodie is for the town they paid for with their own hands.

The print: Red varsity AFRICATOWN lettering on the front, the story of Africatown on the back, and a Vizionary hip tag at the waistband. The stitched look is printed, not embroidered: it's a full-color DTF transfer pressed in Columbus, Ohio, so the design is smooth to the touch.
